Jainism Science - Three types of Vandan

Home > Magazine > English Magazine > Issue : 3 | Mar 2024 > Jainism Science

GURU VANDAN

Every person has their own specific words for communication, and people modify their words for greeting from person to person.

Siblings i.e., brothers and sisters speak to each other in a friendly manner using terms like "Hi-Bye", while speaking to a teacher or sir requires a more respectful tone. This code of conduct governs all communication.

Similarly, in our Jain Shasan, there is specific code for greeting others. When meeting a person, there is a protocol for how to greet them respectfully.

There are different types of greetings or Vandan.

The three main types of Vandan are:

1. Thobh Vandan: Folding hands together and bowing the head slightly respectfully while saying "Matthen Vandami" to sadhu-sadhviji. This is considered as “Thobh Vandan”.

2. Feta Vandan: Offering respectful Vandan to sadhu-sadhviji by saying Ichhakar – Abhuththiyo with folded hands when visiting upashray is called “Feta Vandan”.

3. Dwadashavart Vandan: A more elaborate Vaandana Vandan like “Raai Muhpatti kariye” offered to Acharya Bhagwant respectfully done with reverence is known as “Dwadashavart Vandan”.
