Vandan Story
The 22nd Tirthankar, Shri Neminath Parmatma, while wandering, has arrived in the city of Dwarka. Vasudev Shri Krishna, along with his family, goes daily to pay obeisance to Parmatma Neminath and listens to his deshana.
Once, Shri Krishna says to his sons, Shamb and Palak (charioteer): Tomorrow morning, whoever does Vandan to Neminath Parmatma first, I will gift him a magnificent horse. A desire to get the horse awakens in Palak's mind, so he wakes up early in the morning. Before the sun even rises, he leaves home, reaches Neminath Parmatma, and does vandan. 'Now the horse is definitely mine!' With such confidence, he returns home. On the other hand, when Shamb wakes up, he learns that Palak has already left for Vandan of Neminath Prabhu. Shamb does not get caught up in the lure of the horse, but instead follows Parmatma's instruction that ‘One should not leave home for vandan before sunrise.' He stays in his room, walks 7-8 steps in the direction of Neminath Parmatma, recites the Namutthunam Sutra, and pays his respects to Parmatma with devotion. 'Who should be considered the winner between Shamb and Palak?' Palak, who broke Prabhu's instruction and went to the Samavasaran for vandan in person, or Shamb, who followed Prabhu's instruction and does vandan from his room? A perplexed Shri Krishna asks this question to Neminath Parmatma. Parmatma says: Palak's vandan is dravya vandan (vandan in form). The true bhaav vandan (vandan with feeling) is Shamb's, because he paid respects according to the instructions.
