Sutra - Story
A happy and prosperous city.
In that city ruled a king named Chandravatansak.
King Chandravatansak loved justice and righteous governance, and he was also a strict follower of Jainism.
Knowing the importance of a type of Abhyantar Tapp called "Kayotsarg," he thinks one evening: "Today, I want to do Kayotsarg, but with a specific rule, not just completing it by counting 2/4 Logass."
So the king took a lamp and lit it, and stood in Kayotsarg facing that lamp. “Until this lamp goes out, I will not complete my Kayotsarg!”
After a while the lamp’s oil began to run low and the lamp was ready to go out, when a maid in the palace saw that the king’s discipline was ongoing and that the lamp was about to go out; thinking that a lamp should not be extinguished during an ongoing practice, the maid refills the lamp with ghee!
Poor maid — how could she know that the king’s practice would be complete only when the lamp went out!
This continued all night. Whenever the lamp was about to go out, the maid would come and refill the ghee so the lamp would not go out, and thus prevent the king from completing his Kayotsarg.
Morning arrived. Finally the ghee did run out and the lamp went out. The king completed his Kayotsarg. But because he was not used to staying awake and standing all night in Kayotsarg, his delicate body could not endure the strain. The king collapsed on the spot and died.
He did not get angry at the maid for filling the lamp with ghee all night, nor did he stop her from filling it, nor did he think, "When will this lamp go out, and when will my Kayotsarg be completed?" Remaining focused and steady in Kayotsarg, King Chandravatansak, who performed uninterrupted Kayotsarg, died and attained the state of devgati.
Children! We don't do Kayotsarg all night, do we? It is enough if we purify even 2/4 Logass of Kayotsarg without moving or shaking at all!
